Avon-by-the-Sea is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey with a population of 1,901. Avon-by-the-Sea was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1900, from portions of Neptune City. The Borough was named for Avon, England. The area was once home to the Lenape Native Americans, who lived in scattered small family bands and developed a largely amicable relationship with the Dutch settlers who settled there in 1682.
